I’ll be honest with you—I didn’t start out planning to be a romance writer…even though it was a passion of mine! But somewhere along the way, between reading my hundredth contemporary romance novel and living through my own complicated life choices as a caregiver for disabled adults, I realized something important: these stories matter.
Not in a “guilty pleasure” kind of way. Not in a “it’s just entertainment” kind of way.
They matter because they show us that love doesn’t have to look perfect to be real.
The Power of “Messy” Love Stories
We live in a world that sometimes love is shown to us as some polished, filtered versions of relationships. Social media feeds are full of picture-perfect couples. Rom-coms often give us love stories where the biggest obstacle is a misunderstanding that could be cleared up with one honest conversation.
But real life? Real life can be kinda messy.
Real life is choosing between the career opportunity of a lifetime and staying close to aging parents who need you. It’s falling for your best friend and risking everything. It’s learning to love someone new while still carrying the weight of past heartbreak.
That’s the kind of romance I write. The kind where characters face real choices with real consequences. Where happily-ever-after doesn’t mean everything suddenly becomes perfect—it means finding someone who makes the imperfect parts worth it.
Why Contemporary Romance Resonates
Contemporary romance, for me, has this beautiful ability to reflect our actual lives back to us. Historical romance can transport us to another time. Paranormal romance can sweep us into fantasy worlds. But contemporary romance? It holds up a mirror.
When I write about a woman torn between her dreams and her family obligations, I’m writing about something so many of us have felt. When I create a hero who’s terrified of vulnerability because he’s been hurt before, that’s not fiction—that’s just… well, a normal Tuesday.
These stories validate our experiences. They tell us, “Yes, it’s okay that love is complicated. Yes, it’s normal to struggle with these choices. And yes, you can still get your happy ending.”
What I Hope My Books Do
I write contemporary romance because I want readers to:
- See themselves in my characters – Not the filtered, perfect version of themselves, but the real, complicated, beautifully flawed version;
- Feel less alone – When you’re facing an impossible choice between what you want and what others need from you, it helps to read about someone else navigating that same storm;
- Believe in authentic love – The kind that doesn’t require you to be perfect, just willing to keep choosing each other; and
- Find hope in the mess – Life is complicated, but that doesn’t mean love can’t find a way through.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Here’s the thing about romance novels that I think people who don’t read them often miss: they’re not about escape. Or rather, they’re not just about escape.
They’re about possibilities.
Every romance novel is essentially asking the same question: “What if love could find a way, even when everything is complicated?” And then it shows us how.
That’s powerful. That’s hopeful. And in a world that can feel pretty heavy sometimes, that hope matters more than ever.
What You Can Expect from My Books
If you’re new here, let me tell you what kind of stories I write:
- Characters with real problems (family obligations, career pressures, past trauma, impossible choices);
- Romance that builds naturally (no instant love, no miscommunication as the only plot device);
- Happy endings that feel earned (not perfect, but real and satisfying);
- Small-town settings where everyone knows your business (because isn’t that where the best drama happens?); and
- Love stories where both people grow (not fix each other, but become better versions of themselves).
I write the kind of books I want to read. The ones that make me laugh, make me cry, and make me believe that even when life gets complicated, love is still possible.
